  • Working title / topic
  • 150–250 word summary (aim, scope, key sources)
  • Primary evidence to anchor claims
  • Key secondary references

Fit & scope

  • Ancient world focus (to ~700 AD)
  • History, mythology, material culture, heritage
  • Explain/Guide/Deep-dive formats
  • Clear, verifiable claims with sources

Standards

  • Primary evidence first (text, inscription, object, site)
  • Separate fact, interpretation, and uncertainty
  • No sensationalism; plain, precise prose
  • No undisclosed AI-generated text or images

Evidence & citations

Primary first

Anchor your piece in primary sources (classical texts, inscriptions, papyri, coins, archaeological reports, museum records). Quote or describe the evidence briefly, then interpret.

How to cite

Use concise in-text references or footnotes. Provide enough detail for readers to verify (edition, section/line, inventory number, stable link if available). A short references list is encouraged for longer pieces.

Structure & length

Formats

  • Explain: 900–1,400 words, concept first, minimal detours.
  • Deep-dive: 1,800–3,000+ words, argument + context + debate.
  • Guide: site or object-focused, practical + contextual.

Clarity

Lead with the question. Use short sections, descriptive sub-headings, and a clear conclusion. Define specialist terms briefly in-line.

Images & permissions

Rights

Only submit images you have rights to use (your own, public domain, or licensed with terms allowing online publication). Include credit text and a link to the source or license.

Captions

Provide informative captions (what, where, date, inventory/catalog number if known).

Originality & AI policy

Submissions must be original, not previously published, and free of undisclosed AI-generated text or images. You’re welcome to use tools for grammar or formatting with discretion; ideas, structure, and prose must be your own. Disclose any AI assistance used for limited tasks.
